Nene Park Academy

From April 2010, Swavesey Village College provided leadership and management of Orton Longueville School as part of a National Support School contract with the Interim Executive Board and Peterborough City Council.

Following a formal competitive tender process, the Trust was invited to sponsor the academy on the site of Orton Longueville School, rebranded as Nene Park Academy which opened on 1st September 2011.

The academy combines the very best of the highly successful educational practices at Swavesey Village College with the benefit of the academy’s unique geographical location and partnerships.

Nene Park Academy has already developed a reputation for rapid improvement.

The academy site is now vibrant throughout the year, and late into the evenings, and there’s a drive to see the school back at the heart of the community. The school café is now also open at weekends, and post-16 students at the school work here, serving the locals who visit. The academy’s gym facility is also available to the community and is run by Recharge Fitness.

The school is currently undergoing a £14.25 million modernisation project, which will transform the academy into a dynamic, modern school with state-of-the-art facilities, funded by Peterborough City Council. The project is due to be completed by September 2013.

Students benefit from being located opposite Nene Park Trust with core and extra-curricular opportunities taking place, such as golf and sailing. On sports day, the academy hosted a triathlon, utilising the swimming pool in the adjacent Orton Hall, followed by cycling in the Trust’s park and concluding with a run around the academy track. This is typical of the ways in which the academy is developing its local partnerships.

The link with Peterborough United Football Club is mutually beneficial. Nene Park Academy provides the training base for both the First Team and the Youth Academy. Over 20 of the Club’s under-16 youths receive their full time education at Nene Park Academy.

The 2011-12 Year 11 cohort was the first to graduate with four attaining a full scholarship with the club, and all meeting their academic targets. Two players, Charlie Coulson and Janaai Gordan-Hutton, both featured in the first team as 16 year olds in 2012.
